![]() ![]() This end to the evening left a very negative impression on all of us, and we are not apt to return to The Vanguard. No one in our entire group-each of whom has gone to fine restaurants a couple times a week in cities all over the world for 60+ years-had ever had that happen. ![]() only eight minutes after we paid our bill, as we were just finishing up and saying our goodbyes at our table, the hostess came over to say that we should leave since it was a busy time. It was a Saturday night, and we were glad to see that the place was busy and that there was a good energy and a nice vibe. A much larger issue for our group, however, occurred at the end of our meal. In this world, we had to ask for a plate. In a perfect world, it would have been split for us in a somewhat lesser world, we would have been given an additional plate. An example of a small issue: After we mentioned to the server that we were going to split a salad, it arrived on one plate. As with our first visit, though our group wanted to love it-given the dearth of nice dining opportunities in Broad Ripple-we felt there were small and large issues. This was our second experience at this place. I would prefer a bit less of the competitive "Oh, look how creative we are" that seems to be the fashion now that Indy is becoming more of a "food city" and more attention to detail and showcasing the primary flavors of the dish. The waiter's response to my comments was lukewarm. The pork was under cooked and very fatty and even though I took pains to request that the egg white be thoroughly cooked, I got runny egg white. I ordered the pock chop which came accompanied by crisp hash browns and a sunny side up egg. Our friend raved about her choice of Buttered Noodles. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and my wife loved the pickles that came with. Half a chicken or so in a dark crispy crust. After all, you'll need that extra padding for. Dinner for my wife was the fried chicken. 3:51 You worked hard for that summer body and now the time has come to let loose and celebrate the season's end with the return of Devour Indy. All mustard taste with little to no pate flavor. I found that the tiny dots of chicken liver pate mousse and whipped chevre cheese were overpowered by the layer of fermented nettle mustard. I think the amount of heat on it was a bit of surprise but it did not slow them down in enjoying it. My beloved and her friend ordered the spiced popcorn as an appetizer. The second one, ordered without smoke and on the rocks was even better. This from a man who will eat pretty much anything if it is smoked. ![]() I am not sure what the current fascination with adding smoke to drinks is but I am not sure I need the show. I tried the "Sometimes it Snows in April 11" a lovely mix of Bullet rye whiskey, floodwater apple brandy, house vermouth, Campari, cinnamon, and peppercorn served up in a smoked glass. The bar staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We arrived early for our reservation and went to the bar for a small libation. We tried Vanguard last evening (Saturday) for the first time. ![]()
